Please join us for a talk by John Levi Barnard, Assistant Professor of English, drawn from his new book, Empire of Ruin: Black Classicism and American Imperial Culture (Oxford, 2017). The talk will consider the role of monumental structures in American public memory, as well as a countermonumental tradition within African American cultural production that casts a critical eye on the history and legacies of slavery and empire in the United States.
