Copeland Fund for I.S. Research

We would like to encourage you to think about applying for Copeland Funding to support the work of your I.S.  We know that you are eager to start researching and writing your topics, and this support can help you enrich your project.

For Seniors, the deadline for Copeland funding applications is Friday, October 1 by 5:00 pm.  Juniors should think about applying for Copeland funding to use next summer to get a head start on their Senior I.S. research.  The spring deadline is Wednesday, March 30 by 5pm.  For more details, including the online application and examples of past proposals, see the Copeland Website.

In the past, history majors have used Copeland funding to support their projects in profound, interesting, and enriching ways.  Sarah Hammond traveled to Australia over winter break to speak to historians, read old newspapers, visit the national archives, all to study government policies toward aborigines.  Caroline Eaton traveled to Warsaw, Paris, and Mallorca in order to photograph   monuments, homes and historical markers that commemorate the life of Frederic Chopin.  Callie McCune visited Harvard’s Special Collections to investigate Julia Child’s personal papers.  Jake Sankal received support (for supplies and gas money) to interview residents of the Collinwood neighborhood of Cleveland.  You might think how you can enrich your project by: conducting interviews, traveling to historical sites, working in research collections, museums, or libraries, and more.

If you think you might be interested in doing something like this, read through the guidelines on the College website, then begin thinking about your proposal.  You and your I.S. advisor can discuss your ideas at your weekly meetings.  The best proposals will do the following: explain what you are requesting, explain the larger research question of the Senior I.S., and explain precisely what you will do and how it will enrich your I.S.
