David Gedalecia traveled to Nanjing this past summer to help commemorate the life of a notable Wooster graduate: Guo Bingwen, Class of 1911. While at Wooster, Guo majored in the natural sciences, edited the Wooster Voice, and played with the first Wooster croquet club. (Ok, that last part may be apocryphal). Guo would go on to become an important educational reformer in China, serving as President of Southeast University in Nanjing.
While in Nanjing, Prof. Gedalecia was invited to perform a concert of “American Country Music.” (See the poster advertising his performance above.) Enquiries were sent to all corners of the city, but no banjo could be found. He had to make do with a guitar and a brief rehearsal. By all reports, his set, which stretched from country blues to early rock and roll to bluegrass and beyond, was a great success.
