Dear History Students & Colleagues,
Welcome back to campus for the spring semester! Let me share a special welcome to Prof. Gedalecia, who is back from leave, and to the many students who are returning from off-campus study.
For you seniors, I hope you had a wonderful and productive winter break. We look forward to helping you get to I.S. Monday without anguish. For those of you enrolled this semester in History 401—Junior I.S., I wish you a great start to your research. Stay tuned for a message on Junior I.S. that follows this one.
I might add: you will find an updated list of majors and advisors on the History bulletin board. We’ll be posting a list of Senior I.S. titles early this week.
We have some exciting events coming up this semester. Let me tell you about a few of them very briefly.
Opportunities in Public History. We have a series of talks and workshops on public history scheduled this semester. This will be a chance to learn about opportunities in museums, archives, historical societies, and more. Whether you are a first-year major figuring out what you want to do in history or are finishing up your Senior I.S. and thinking about careers after college, there will be something here for you to think about. The first event is coming up this Thursday at 11am in Kauke Tower. Put it on your calendar now and keep your eye out for the full announcement. We have additional events scheduled for February 24 and April 7.
Other Campus Visits. We also have some other events coming up, for Black History month and for our edification. Campus visits are in the works to address the history of the Civil Rights Movement, Islam, roadside diners in postwar America, and more. Stay tuned for details.
Early American/U.S. History Search. As you might know, the Department is engaged in a search for a historian to replace Karen Taylor, who retired last year. Well, Prof. Taylor is not someone who will be easily replaced. Let’s just say we are hiring a historian of early American or nineteenth-century U.S. history who will also teach courses in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. In any case, you’ll see some visitors around campus before too long. And we’ll ask you to meet them, explain the College and the Department of History, and tell us what you think.
There will be more: Café Bob events, preparations for the I.S. Symposium, a spring picnic, and more.
For now, let me wish you all a great start to the new semester! If you need help with Departmental business, stop by my office in Kauke 111. All the best, gks
